Settled in the north of Congo, the Kwele are known for their famous Ekuk masks. They are flat, often white, heart-shaped a triangular nose and cut-out eyes in the shape of coffee beans. These masks were hung in houses and only rarely worn, during initiation ceremonies into the Bwete cult. Their purpose was to activate positive forces in the village.
