Dizhi Shen, which translates to Saints of Earthly Branches, are human figure sculptures with animals heads of the Chinese zodiac signs. Created widely during the Tang Dynasty, original Shengxiao (Chinese Zodiac) pieces were commonly placed in coffins or tombs to guard and protect the dead. This Dragon Dizhi Shen is made of glazed porcelain with a carved earthen clay base.
